In July this year, the Sunshine Coast council began seeking interested parties in a large scale solar farm to be located at Valdora. It is predicted that the proposed solar farm will cater for half councils electricity needs for the next 30 years and will provide a multi-million dollar saving for ratepayers.

Sunshine Coast region is aiming to become the most sustainable region in Australia. In 2010 the council's Energy Transition Plan set a goal for the area to become a low carbon economy, producing 40MW of sustainable power by 2015 and 100MW by 2020. The recent proposal is a large step in reaching the goal to be the solar capital of coastal Australia.
'This project has the potential to transform the Sunshine Coast. It would become the embodiment of everything we stand for; a region which is economically, environmentally and socially sustainable. It would save money, reduce our carbon footprint and take us another step closer to becoming the most sustainable region in Australia,' Sunshine Coast Mayor, Mark Jamieson said.
The Sunshine Coast Solar undertaking is expected to boost the local economy by $10 million over the life of the project and produce approximately 40 jobs.
In the past 2 years, installations of solar power systems have tripled in certain areas of the Sunshine Coast, making the area a leader in green energy in Queensland.
