Are you prepared for the coming storm season? The Queensland government and the SES are urging South East Queenslander's to undertake some simple preparations to ensure homes are 'electrically' storm ready and stay safe during the storms.
Before the storms
- Enlist a Brisbane electrician to install a safety switch into your home.
- Test your safety switch regularly.
- If your home is in a flood-prone area you may want to raise your power points to above flood levels.
- Ensure all members of your home know where to turn off the electricity, gas, and water.
- Turn off solar power systems .

During the storm
- Turn off and unplug all electrical equipment when a storm threatens.
- Disconnect external TV and radio aerials.
- Fixed or land line telephones should not be used in a storm as there is a risk of electric shock.
- Move all electrical equipment to a high location where possible if flooding is expected.
After the storm
- Stay clear of fallen power lines.
- Avoid any damaged electrical equipment including switchboards, power points, and appliances.
- If you have solar power stay off the roof and away from the panels and cables.
- Do not use any appliance which may have been in contact or damaged by water. Electrical shock and fire can occur from even slightly water affected appliances.
- Ensure your home is checked by a licensed electrician if storm damage or flood damage has occurred. If you are not certain if damage has been sustained, have an electrician check it anyway. Taking risks with electrical systems can cause electric shock and death.
- Have your electrician check over any hard-wired appliances such as air conditioning systems, stoves, and hot water systems.
