Test and tag requirements are here to stay, despite a recent move by Attorney General Jarrod Bleijie to remove the electrical safety testing regulations requiring businesses to have all electrical equipment tested and tagged every six months.
Mr Bleijie said the current test and tag provisions were out of date. 'The massive number of safety switches now installed in workplaces and homes means that only equipment with a rating over 20 amps needs a test and tag regime,' Mr Bleijie commented.
Public opinion on the matter, particularly from the electrical industry, was not in favour of scrapping the safety regulations. Placing the electrical safety of a home or business solely in the care of a safety switch was very risky as the removal of this safety net does not account for faulty safety switches.
The regular test and tag system, as well as a functioning safety switch, needs to be seen as a network of safety measures to ensure backup procedures are ready if one aspect fails.
