Keep your power bills down by using your air conditioner in the most energy efficient way possible.
As the temperature soars this summer and we all do our best to stay cool and comfortable by using the air conditioner, there is a risk that your power bill may also do some soaring of its own. Surprisingly, air conditioning and high electricity bills don't have to go hand in hand. By using your air conditioner efficiently and following a few easy tips to help your home stay cool, you can avoid the hefty bill at the end of summer.
Energy efficient air conditioner tips
- Close off rooms that don't require cooling to reduce the air conditioned area. For example bedrooms, bathrooms and laundry during the day.
- Draw curtains or blinds to keep the heat and sunlight from coming in through the windows.
- Avoid using excess lighting inside as this can add to the temperature.
- Use ceiling fans or pedestal fans to circulate the cool air.
- Use your exhaust fan when cooking to remove the heat from the kitchen.
- Ensure the air filters in your air conditioner are removed and cleaned regularly.
- Schedule a regular air conditioner service .
- Set the thermostat to between 25 - 27 degrees Celsius. Each degree cooler can increase the air conditioner's energy consumption by 5 to 10 %.
- Open up your home during the cooler times of day such as evening and then again in the morning for a short time to allow fresh air inside and to remove stuffy air from unused rooms which can add to the temperature of the house. Don't forget to secure your home at night.
Stay cool for less this summer.
