The biggest cost in a Solar Power Installation is the Solar Panels and the biggest cost in Solar Panels is the silicon used. To get a good conversion from the Sun's energy to electrical energy you need to use high-quality silicon, which costs a reasonable amount. But new technology being developed by UNSW could change all that.

Making solar panels more efficient with lower quality silicon

Currently, the best commercial solar cells convert between 17 to 19 percent of the Sun's energy into electricity. However, this new technology can get between 21 and 23 percent efficiency using lower quality Silicon. It is all to do with using Hydrogen to counter flaws in Silicon. So if you can get more efficient solar panels using lower quality and cheaper Silicon, it stands to reason a solar power installation will be cheaper.
