Queenslanders have spent $1.45 billion on solar installations, since March 2011. University of Queensland solar expert, Dr Ariel Liebman, is quoted as saying; 'high power costs and environmental concerns are driving more and more homeowners towards solar technology.'

The fear of ever increasing electricity bills, climate awareness, budget conscious retirees and last year's ‘limited offer' to secure the 44c feed-in tariff, have all contributed to the explosion in the solar industry in Queensland.

Over the past two years, Queenslanders have been spending $2 million per day, on solar installations ; which has equated to the number of systems across the state quadrupling, in that time. Latest figures show Queensland now has more than 282 000 solar systems, statewide, in comparison to 73 000, in March 2011.

In Buderim alone, installations have sky-rocketed from almost 800 to more than 2 350, in just two years! This makes Buderim the top solar suburb in the state's South-East.

Clean Energy Council's policy director, Mr Russell Marsh explains, “A large number of retirees reside in Buderim, and older Queenslanders have been one of the largest groups leading the way towards solar power, over the past couple of years. Many retirees who are asset-rich but income-poor have turned to solar power to help minimise living costs and maximise quality of life.”

The surge in installations in Buderim have been attributed to the high population of self-funded retirees concerned about the rising cost of electricity, along with the lower proportion of rental properties and average incomes slightly lower than the state average.

Further to the north, the Bundaberg region shows figures of more than 3 500 solar systems installed, making it the most ‘solar-savvy' area outside the southeast. A local Ergon Energy spokesman said the solar industry experienced a particular boom more than three years ago when several companies were very actively marketing the technology. This paved the way for an increase in installations between the years 2008 to 2010.

The average cost of an installation has varied too greatly, over the past two years to quote a figure, but the monthly, average system size fluctuated between 2.1kW and 4kW. By installing a solar power system on your home, you can achieve two goals: save yourself some money and contribute to the reduction in greenhouse gases.
