We can't stress the importance of electrical safety around the home enough, and, in particular - clothes dryer safety. Clothes dryers are often the cause of laundry fires that could potentially spread throughout the house. When they're maintained and used correctly, clothes dryers are quite safe and very convenient. You can minimise the risk of fire by giving attention to some simple, regular safety steps.
14 tips on using the clothes dryer safely
- Ensure your clothes dryer is installed as stated in the manufacturer's instruction manual.
- Read the manufacturer's instruction manual in full, before first use and keep it handy for future reference.
- Maintain your clothes dryer in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
- Clean the lint filter every time you use it and regularly vacuum behind and under the dryer. These are places that lint can build up and increase the temperature in the drum and potentially cause a fire.
- Ensure the dryer's exhaust duct is straight and as short as possible, to avoid lint accumulating; this can create a fire hazard but will also cause the dryer to take much longer to dry clothes and use excessive power.
- Ensure the area is well ventilated and free of clutter, to avoid elevating the temperature of the drum.
- Read product labels on fabric softeners etc, and only use in a clothes dryer if they're recommended by the manufacturer.
- Do not put any articles in a clothes dryer that have previously been washed, spotted with or soaked in any flammable or explosive substances.
- Do not overload the dryer, this can cause damage to the machine and will use excessive power.
- Do not use the machine if it's making unusual noises, such as grinding or thumping.
- Always allow the machine to complete its cycle, including the âcool down' cycle.
- Do not overload power points.
- Do not leave the clothes dryer operating if you leave the house.
- The interior of the clothes dryer can only be cleaned and maintained by a licenced Electrician.
